1 Billion Miles to Safety

People forced to flee violence and persecution take extraordinary risks to reach safety for their families. At a time of unprecedented global displacement, we are coming together to honor the resilience and determination of refugees and walk in solidarity with them.

Together, we are challenging ourselves to cover one billion miles in 12 months, the same number of miles refugees worldwide travel each year to reach the nearest point of safety.

From South Sudan to Uganda, Myanmar to Bangladesh, Syria to Jordan; refugees endure long, dangerous and difficult journeys.

“It was a very terrible journey, we had to cross a jungle and climb huge hills,” says Alin who fled Myanmar and carried her two young children for ten days until they reached safety.

Through this collective effort we will show our solidarity, increase awareness about refugee issues, raise money to protect refugees and help them to rebuild their lives.

Building a better understanding of refugees

There are a lot of misconceptions about refugees. Here are some facts:

  1. Refugees are people forced to flee to another country because of war or persecution. They are recognized as “refugees” because it is too dangerous for them to return home and they are protected by international law.
  2. The majority of refugees stay close to home with most fleeing to neighboring countries. Only 1% of refugees are ever resettled in third countries. Turkey hosts the most refugees followed by Pakistan, Uganda and Lebanon.
  3. Around the world, fewer than a third of people forced to flee live in refugee camps. Most refugees are actually struggling to survive in cities and towns. This is especially true for Syrian refugees.

Through this movement we aim to build a better understanding about refugees and the struggles they face. Please help by sharing.

This global movement is being organized by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. They are the world’s leading organization dedicated to supporting people forced to flee or those deprived of a nationality. They lead international actions to protect them, deliver lifesaving assistance like shelter, food and water, and help to safeguard fundamental human rights.
