When Opani's village was threatened by war and violence, she and her daughter fled from South Sudan to Uganda. This is her story.
When fighting reached Opani's village she fled with her daughter Brenda and one suitcase to her grandfather's nearby village.
When the fighting caught up with them again, she was forced to flee South Sudan on foot carrying Brenda. They slept outside under the constant threat of attack.
Opani and her daughter walked day after day to reach safety, surviving on nothing but wild berries.
"We slept under a tree. You sleep with one eye open", Opani recalls.
On arrival at the UNHCR registration centre, they were given medical screening, hot food and emergency shelter.
Supported by the Ugandan Government and UNHCR, Opani has been assigned a plot of land at the Imvepi settlement, where she can start rebuilding her life.
