UNHCR is committed to protecting individual privacy and securing the personal information made available by users of UNHCR websites, including, as well as UNHCR web pages on external sites (such as official UNHCR profiles on social networks).

This privacy policy describes what information is made available to UNHCR and third parties when you visit or official UNHCR web pages dedicated to the campaign on other sites, and how UNHCR uses and stores that information. Any information voluntarily disclosed to UNHCR by users of UNHCR websites is held with the utmost care and security and will not be used in ways other than as set forth in this privacy policy.

Providing information is your choice. When you undertake certain actions on, such as signing up to participate in the 2 Billion Kilometres to Safety campaign or signing up to donate to UNHCR, you knowingly provide us with personal information about you, such as your name, email address, telephone number and other information.

We use this voluntarily provided personal information in order to interact with you and provide relevant services and information on the progress of the 2 Billion Kilometres to Safety campaign, your personal contribution to campaign progress, UNHCR’s work and opportunities to further support refugees. In addition, we may use your email address to target messages for you on our social media platforms and identify other people on the Internet who are most likely to support UNHCR work and help refugees. This may include uploading an encrypted list of email addresses to services such as Facebook. This data is not stored or reused by the service provider and is only held for the duration of the matching process.

In addition, when you sign up on to join the 2 Billion Kilometres to Safety campaign and select the fitness app through which you may contribute miles/kilometres to the campaign, you will enable us to receive data on the number of miles/kilometres you have personally registered through the app. We use this information, received through an API connection with the app, to calculate the total number of miles/kilometres contributed to the campaign by campaign participants worldwide. We will also use the total of miles/kilometres registered by your personal fitness app to keep you informed on your personal contribution to the campaign, but will not make this information public.

We will not make public your personal information without` your consent. We do not sell or share your personal information voluntarily disclosed to us with anyone outside UNHCR unless it is for the explicit purpose of completing a donation transaction that you initiate. If you provide your personal information when joining this campaign online, you will only be contacted by UNHCR for purposes related to the 2 Billion Kilometres to Safety campaign or to the work of UNHCR.

Opting out

Users who provide an email address and/or phone number via a UNHCR website and opt in to receive email communication from UNHCR will receive communications from UNHCR via email and, occasionally and phone. Each email sent by UNHCR includes an option to remove your address from the mailing list. In addition, at any time, you can unsubscribe or modify your information by sending an email to
