When Alin Nisa's village was attacked by armed men, she fled with her family from Myanmar to Bangladesh in search of safety. This is her story.

Fleeing Myanmar

Alin's family were forced to flee their village at 3am when armed men arrived, abducting people and demanding food and money. They had nothing but the clothes on their back.

Wading through rivers

With her husband, mother-in-law and two young children, Alin crossed mountains and rivers. She carried the children while her husband carried his mother who could not walk.

Across water-logged fields

Along the journey the family walked across water-logged paddy fields, in torrential rain, sometimes through the night.

Arriving in Bangladesh

They survived on the little dry food people gave them along the way. Sometimes they did not eat at all. Finally, they arrived at the Kutupalong Extension Site in Bangladesh.

Building a shelter

Now safe in Bangladesh, the family has built a shelter, using plastic sheeting and bamboo - all provided by UNHCR. They also received a cooking kit, mats and blankets.
